Pat's Island - Ocala National Forest 2009 : Details of the Settlement here : The Yearling Trail Pats Island is one of the most popular historic attractions on the Ocala National Forest. The area was named after it's first postmaster Patrick Smith who settled there in the 1840's and the unique relationship of two ecosystems, long leaf pine and sand pine scrub. Much of the land bounded by the St. Johns and Ocklawaha rivers consists of the largest concentration of sand pine scrub in the world. Within this vast area there are oases of fertile soils and moisture that support growth of longleaf pine, wiregrass, turkey oak and other trees and plants not found in the surrounding arid scrub. Pioneers who settled in these areas called them islands because a sea of scrub surrounded them. The Reuben Long family came to the area around 1872 and individual family members applied for and were granted homestead acres that they worked and lived on for many years. Human habitation on the island peaked before the turn of the 20th century when about a dozen families sought to eke out a living on the 1400-acre island. A living was made from farming, running woods cattle and hogs, hunting, fishing, making moonshine whisky, and trading with boat travel on the St. Johns River. There is an ecological uniqueness of this of a longleaf pine island surrounded by scrub pine, which creates a single community isolated from the mainstream of central Florida life. The imposed remoteness contributed to a community essentially untouched by outside forces. The community had its own church, school, post office and self-appointed lay ministers. Life was hard on the island and after the big back-to-back freezes of 1894 and 1895 the population began to decline. Most of the settlers had sold or leased their homesteads before the Ocala National Forest was formed in 1908. Outside forces were slowly bringing life as it had been on the island to an end. In 1935 the island was abandoned by man and surrendered back to the elements after less than 100 years of human occupation. The natural beauty of the area and the colorful life style of these rugged people fascinated the author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. She stayed with the last two inhabitants of the island, Calvin and Mary Long in October 1933. During this and other visits she recorded many stories told by the Longs. Calvin's childhood story of nursing a deer from a fawn gave her the idea for the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Yearling". The book was made into a movie starring Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman, Jr. and was filmed on location in the early 1940's. Today you too can visit Pat's Island via the Yearling Trail. The trailhead is located on SR 19 across from the Silver Glen Springs entrance. From there you can hike up to 6 miles visiting various sites of historical significance and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. Pats Island is located in Juniper Prairie Wilderness where natural processes are the primary influences and human activity is limited. Forest Service management of Pat's Island preserves and protects its physical and biological characteristics and allows us to experience this treasure without intention to disturb or destroy natural processes. As wilderness, the island is closed to motorized equipment and bicycles. As you circle the island, stop and notice the sites where the residents once lived. When you once again see the sand pine scrub, you will be arriving back at the trailhead. Perhaps you may want to complete your trip with a visit to Silver Glen Springs. Snacking at a shaded picnic table or swimming in crystal clear 72 degrees year around water is a great way to top off the day. You may want to visit the Boils Trail at the glen where Jody (of The Yearling) built a "flutter mill" with palmetto leaf and sticks. It was here that he nodded off to sleep when he was supposed to be home attending his chores.

Beau Rivage - Biloxi MS : There is nothing like taking a break, but as a guest of the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS, I was impressed with a lot to do - and of course, true Southern Hospitality ! With over One BILLION dollars invested, this hotel and casino, the Beau Rivage has made every effort to provide for a complete lineup of activities and luxuries for you. It all starts with a charter flight service out of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater airport that gets you to Biloxi/Gulfport in just over one hour. Don't think puddle jumpers. This MD80 jet holds plenty of people and we didn't see any empty seats ! Upon arrival, you and your luggage are moved promptly to the hotel where your luggage may be in your room ahead of you ! While most visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast to enjoy the gambling, my trip was to have a look at all that Biloxi and the hotel had to offer. My stay was just over 48 hours but I could have easily stayed a few more days. My weekend selection centered around the Pay Per View broadcast of Hook City, a boxing event featuring Roy Jones and Jeff Lacy. Upon arrival I promptly headed for the weigh in of boxers. Of course, the event featured the usual banter and posing for the jammed room of media types. After the weigh in, i had a chance to explore the hotel in greater detail. With over 1,700 rooms, the Beau Rivage has it all. Of course, a full floor of gaming of every type, Steak House, Southern Bar B Q, Buffet, retail shops, salon, spa, large pool area overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and plenty more. Dinner at Jia was an exceptional treat. This Asian sushi, grille, and more had more sake selections than I think I had ever seen. Staff knew every detail of the menu items and provided incredible service and more. Their Sake Flight, provided 6 different selections of very distinct flavors. Entertainment of world caliber was ready to happen either in the Beau Rivage or conveniently nearby. Most of the theaters/venues were in the 2,000 to 5,000 seating range providing great visibility and sound.. Friday night provided a choice between Melissa Etheridge, Michael Bolton, and Foreigner. All within walking distance. I selected the Foreigner concert. It was a great show in a less than 3,000 seat theatre with a near perfect sound system. Their hits just kept coming with Feels the First Time, Juke Box Hero, Head Games and plenty more.
In talking with other guests that had attended the other two shows, all were pleased with the performance and quality they had experienced as well.

Walking around Biloxi later at night felt comfortable while visiting local establishments including the Fillin Station, in an old gas station of course. I visited four large casinos on Friday night before returning to the Beau Rivage where the music and crowd at their Coast Lounge pulled me in for awhile before calling it a night. Saturday started early.

It was a full day with an excursion on the Sailfish with the Biloxi Shrimping Tour. Large nets were pulled in while knowledgeable crew members described the various catch and their habitat.
The Biloxi Train Tour featured the historic buildings but significantly showcased the damage and devastation from Hurricane Katrina. Residents seemed pleased to see the trolley train that has been an institution in Biloxi for many years. The night featured ringside seating at the Pay Per View fights including Roy Jones and St. Petersburg’s Jeff Lacy. Plenty of additional bouts - BJ Flores achieved a 4 round tko against Mendoza. BJ has an impressive record and shared some of his comments and experiences as we watched the Jones vs Lacy fight together. Also on the card was popular Australian fighter Danny Greene – The Greene Machine.

Biloxi was an impressive place to spend a few days. While the other hotels and casinos were nice. There was no place as nice as and as busy as the Beau Rivage. While my stay was only for about 48 hours, I felt like I was leaving too soon.
Future entertainment at the Beau Rivage include Kenny G, Pat Benatar, Wayne Newton, Better than Ezra and more !

ConnectUs Effort for High Speed Rail : It was a travelling day as US Rep. Kathy Castor lead business and community leaders from Orlando to Tampa in an effort to obtain funding for a high speed rail connection between Tampa and Orlando. Indicating that the project was high on the qualification list of receiving almost 3 Billion dollars in Federal stimulus funds in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project. While a few other areas were in competition, Rep. Castor made it clear that only this proposal had already acquired the right of way and was ready to go on the construction phase. She further indicated that the proposal had bipartisan and cross state support. A letter was previously sent to Ray LaHood, Secretary of the Department of Transportation, supporting the proposal signed by 10 members of the Florida Congressional Delegation. The decision should be made prior to the end of the year. Castor further emphasized the amount of jobs that the proposed construction would bring. The cross state event was used to promote the establishment of a "grass roots" support group to assist in the initial efforts to secure the funding through the Obama administration. The effort will be lead by former Hillsborough County Commissioner Ed Turanchik. Support was evident from political, business, and labor leaders from across Florida. The support group indicated they had initial funding of $50,000. While the effort has been billed as "grass roots" we spoke with other city and county officials that expressed resentment about having not received information about the effort, however, all were in support of the high speed rail effort. You can visit their website at http://www.fastrailconnectus.com/ Noticeably absent from the event was Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and TBARTA Chairman Shelton Quarles. Quarles announced his decision to not continue to serve as chairman later in the day citing a busy schedule with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Double Decking Gandy : The South Tampa Chamber of Commerce was treated to a presentation by Susan Chrzan of the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority on the proposal to double deck Gandy Boulevard from where the bridge meets the mainland to the Selmon Expressway. With a goal to provide a faster evacuation route and to help to eliminate traffic on Gandy Boulevard, this plan for an elevated 2 lane highway 30 feet over the current Gandy Boulevard seems on track for construction in the next few years. Residents have opposed the plan citing noise and visual issues. Businesses have opposed the plan complaining that construction will hamper access to their businesses. A public hearing is scheduled for August 25th.

It's Not a Corridor, It's our Neighborhood : Over one hundred residents and business leaders attend a public hearing of the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority at New Beginnings Christian Church on August 25th. The topic of discussion was the Proposed Solution for a regional traffic express lane.

The recent expansion and improvements of Gandy Boulevard by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have just now been completed. For the past year, businesses have coped with blocked driveways, barriers, construction equipment, and traffic delays as the expansion of medians, turn lanes, and paving have made driving Gandy Boulevard a most unpleasant experience.

Some businesses could not hold on and have closed. Property owners have watched vacancy rates rise and cash flow drop. The results of the improvements are just now starting to be felt. Most residents and businesses are excited about the improvements.

Then along comes the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority- (THEA). They have been working for several years to explore methods to improve the hurricane evacuation plan for Pinellas and South Tampa residents. Additionally, they have watched traffic continue to increase on Gandy. Their concern has been genuine and has included plenty of public participation opportunities.

THEA has now come forward with a plan to build a two lane elevated road for the approximately 1.45 miles between where the Gandy Bridge meets the mainland and the Selmon Expressway just north of Gandy on Dale Mabry. The plan is to provide the approximate 40% of through drivers a faster access and the ability to use both lanes for evacuation if required. THEA has indicated that the $115 million cost can be covered by tolls and not through tax increases. They further indicated that 97 businesses would be affected and almost 1500 jobs would be created as a result of the elevated option.

The problems are numerous and many in the area affected are not happy.
Rick Joiner an area resident since 1982 supports the presented idea as long as it is not paid for by tax dollars. His biggest concern is to be prepared in the event of emergencies.
“How can you continue to oppose things with supporting improvements ?” he asked.

Resident Bill Wilson questioned how THEA could ignore the “overwhelming opposition of neighbors” to the plan. He claimed the recent improvements have not yet been given a chance to work. His further concern was whether the jobs to be created would be just of those who come from out of town or for local residents. “Let’s bring it up, not bring it down. Let’s give Gandy Boulevard a chance to work.”

Mikeale Eskildsen of ScanDesign accuse THEA of having “already determined the outcome of the public hearings.” He further questioned THEA to “name one place where crime did not increase and property values didn’t decrease from an elevated roadway?”

“You guys call it a corridor, we call it Gandy Boulevard, a street in our neighborhood” said John Tompkins. John Launikitis’s parents live a block from Gandy, he was concerned about seeing vacant and dilapidated buildings. “It doesn’t benefit us.”

Allan Steenson of the Gandy Civic Association challenged THEA, “We aren’t here to sell you, you are here to sell us.” He further commented on the recent FDOT improvements as a “wonderful job” and called the proposal unacceptable. Residential and commercial property owner Mark Rubio said simply he cannot go through any more construction. “I am against it. I am against it. I am against it.”

Expressway Authority Board Member Don Phillips indicated his appreciation for the neighborhood and that he would do nothing to harm the community. He welcomed all of the comments.

Dante Conte indicated he had not spoken to a public group since grade 3, but he wanted “to do good. There has to be change.” His concern was for the future congestion.

The next step will be for meeting of the Project Advisory Group for Tuesday, Sept 29, at 6:30 PM at Monroe Middle School. That meeting could result in a recommendation to the FDOT for approval before a final decision by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority. (This date and location is subject to change)
